Dec 5th 2007 brought a huge huge surf along the California coastline.  I took this photo at the Devereux Beach in Isla Vista (Near UCSB), California at Sunrise. There was an offshore breeze causing the water to spray off the tops of the waves as they broke.  It's difficult to tell how big these waves were, but they were easily 10 feet high.
